IMMIGRATION FROM THE PHILIPPINES TO CANADA
According to Canada’s 2021 Census data, the Philippines was the second most frequently reported place of birth by recent immigrants. The most popular pathways for immigration are through the caregiver pathway, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
Leonora Angeles, UBC professor for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice, says that Canada is a popular destination for Filipinos because of its quality of life and economic and social opportunities. She adds that about 56 per cent of Filipino immigrants are in Canada through economic migration pathways such as the FSWP and the caregiver pathway.
Many Filipino immigrants moved to Canada in hopes for a brighter future for their future generations. Their stories have a common thread – their love for their family. This shared sentiment acts as motivation for their sacrifices, even if that means leaving their families behind for the time being.
