B.C.’s Marine Ecosystem: How seals and sea lions play a key role

The coast off Light House Park in West Vancouver is one of the sites where people can watch marine mammals from the Pacific shore.

Seals and sea lions have recently been making waves. In mid-March, a seal was found with a gunshot wound off Kitsilano beach. In early April, dozens of sea lions descended on a fish farm near Tofino B.C. where they snacked on farmed Atlantic salmon causing fish to escape. Atlantic salmon are considered invasive species and can cause harm to wild salmons on B.C.’s side of the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, other sea lions were trapped in the farm’s nets. These events surfaced a long-standing conversation on the complex issue of whether to cull seals and sea lions and what that would mean for B.C.’s Marine Ecosystem.
